A Bitter Breakup Leads to Legal Chaos Over Stolen Money and Defamation Claims

A legal battle recently unfolded in the courtroom, pitting former couple Antoanet Walker and Alfred Chapman Jr. against each other over claims of fraud, defamation, and stolen money. The dispute centers around a failed romantic relationship, where both parties accuse each other of deceit, with tensions reaching a breaking point as they fought for a $2,100 payout. The former couple, who had been dating for one year, had plans to rent an apartment together. To manage their expenses, they decided to pool their income tax returns, contributing $1,500 each. Antoanet Walker entrusted the money to her then-boyfriend, Alfred Chapman, who was supposed to keep it in a locked box.

Only Chapman had the key to the box, which seemed to ensure the security of their shared funds. However, things quickly turned sour when the couple broke up unexpectedly.

Walker testified that Chapman suddenly ended the relationship, citing only her “lifestyle” as the reason for the breakup. This vague explanation was followed by Walker’s belief that Chapman had taken advantage of her by planning to steal the money she had entrusted to him. According to Walker, Chapman had even tried to take back a laptop and iPad he had gifted her, which further fueled the accusations of fraud. Walker’s mother confirmed that Chapman had taken the laptop, claiming it was a payment for the $1,500 Walker had provided. The situation took an even more troubling turn when Walker claimed that Chapman had manipulated her into attempting to withdraw the $1,500 from his account the following day. When Walker arrived at the ATM, however, the account had been canceled, suggesting a deliberate effort to erase any trace of the funds.  Chapman, on the other hand, denied the accusations and provided a very different version of events. He argued that the breakup had occurred because Walker was frequently partying and never home when he returned from work. This, he claimed, had made it impossible to continue their relationship.
